Tired of your life looking the same? Feeling like you need changes and new experiences? Then you need to learn how to step out of your comfort zone! Your action when you are in your comfort zone is the typical thing you do daily. But leaving and getting out of your comfort zone is a good way for you to overcome your fears.
Its about letting go of the things you think could go wrong and ultimately taking a leap of faith and doing the impossible. We all know that permanently staying inside of your comfort zone keeps your life from progressing and getting better.
But how to get out of your comfort zone when you don’t really have a plan. I’ll tell you what I’ve been doing for the last years to leave my comfort zone regularly. But is it a good thing to get out of your comfort zone?
I believe stepping out of your comfort zone is the most adventurous and fantastic thing because it allows you to change for the better and improve yourself.
Feeling nervous and overwhelmed about leaving your comfort zone is normal and to be expected. It’s called your comfort zone for a reason.
But you will never truly be able to grow as a person and improve your life if you don’t step out of your comfort zone and try new things.
So let’s start talking about how you can get out of your comfort zone so you can start becoming the awesome person you want to be!
1) Write down your life goals:
The best way to do this is to write down all of your life goals and what you are wanting your life to look like.
Once you start to think about this and visualize what you want your life to look like you can start to figure out the best ways to step out of your comfort zone.
The first thing you need to do when you are trying to step out of your comfort zone is to think about what you want to accomplish and why. Never take anything for granted, You can learn a lot through the experience you go through in life. These experiences build you as a person, whether that’s through your struggles or your successes. I have learned a lot about myself through both and I am grateful for every single situation that allowed me to grow as a person.
2) Change up your routines:
Once you know what you want your life to look like by stepping out of your comfort zone then you can start to change your routines to account for this.
Switch up small things in your routine to allow you to get out of your comfort zone.
Things like waking up earlier (here are some tips on waking up earlier) so you can go for a run in a new park. Or trying different coffee shops in the morning. Little changes in your routines will help you step out of your comfort zone.
3) Move toward what you fear:
The next thing you can do, which if you truly commit can be the most helpful, is to try one small (or large) new thing each week. This tip will really help you to get out of your comfort zone.
By setting and sticking to this goal of trying one new thing each week you will quickly find yourself getting more comfortable with leaving your comfort zone.
One of the best ways to actually stick to this tip is to make a bucket list of new things out of your comfort zone that you want to try. Then you can easily plan out what new things you want to do each week!
The biggest decision we have to make is between acting out of fear or acting out of freedom. Staying in our little boxes or stepping out into the unknown. Each decision leads to a completely different outcome.
And the hard part to realize is that nobody is going to make this decision for us. It’s our job. “Life is what you make it”?
Plan 2-3 of those things per month -This is the part where it gets real. Block of 2-3 days per month to do a few of those things you wrote down.
Knowing when you will do things outside of your comfort zone makes it easier to prepare and at some point leaving the comfort zone for smaller things will get easier. Overcoming fear is a muscle that needs to be trained to stay in shape.
4) Meet new people:
Meeting new people is not only one of the best benefits of leaving your comfort zone but it also is one of the ways you can leave it more.
So basically it is a win-win!
By talking to people around you that you don’t know as well (like coworkers, classmates, neighbors, etc) you can expose yourself to more and more people that have experienced differently than your own. Meeting new people is the best way to expand your mind and leave your comfort zone.
So what does that look like in friendship? Making friends in college can be really hard because it’s all on us to go out there and meet people.
It might be a shock when we realize nobody is going to come knocking on our dorm room doors to hang with us because frankly, they don’t know who we are. We have to go first.
And so that’s why my biggest advice in making friends is to be a friend first. Step out of yourself and be the first to help someone in need, spread kindness, or help someone with something tedious.
Nine times out of ten, these scenarios most likely turn into friendships.
We need to shift our thinking from “who’s being a friend to me?” to “who am I being a friend to?” The first option will lead to loneliness, but the second will lead to joy.
It’s not easy to give up your comfort to be a friend to someone, but it is so, so worth it. Loving others is so much more life-giving than focusing on ourselves.
5) Get comfortable with being uncomfortable:
Leaving your comfort zone won’t be comfortable.
There will be times when you want to go running back to your comfort zone.
It will be uncomfortable and that’s okay. Just remind yourself of what you are doing and why you are doing it!
Sometimes you will need to slow down this journey and that’s okay too but keep trying. Remember that you are going to feel uncomfortable while growing as a person.
6) put yourself in a vulnerable situation:
Another important tip to remember is that sometimes you will fail.
You will try things that are out of your comfort zone and you won’t succeed at them. And that’s honestly just as important.
Some of the most important lessons you will learn in life are from stepping out of your comfort zone and failing. And if you never stepped out of your comfort zone you would have never learned that lesson!
Some of the most important lessons you will learn in life are from stepping out of your comfort zone and failing.
7) Boost your Efficacy of decision-making:
If you are overthinking every decision you won’t be as likely to make the decision to step out of your comfort zone.
So work on making decisions quicker.
Go with your instincts and say yes more often. By doing this you will end up in situations more often that are out of your comfort zone.
This of course is slightly less applicable to important decisions. But low importance things that you may overthink will end in you saying no to new things. So be quick to say yes and welcome things out of your comfort zone.
8) Reevaluate the things you expect:
The final tip for how to step out of your comfort zone is to keep a record of everything you are trying.
Just grab a notebook and jot down new things you have tried that are out of your comfort zone.
This is important so that you can look back at what you have done and use it to continue to motivate you to make this a lifelong journey.
You will always have something new to learn out of your comfort zone.
